Anthony Davis is one of the most talented and versatile players in the NBA, but he is also known for being injury-prone and fragile. The Los Angeles Lakers star missed many games in the 2022-23 season with injury, which has been the trend for his entire career. To change that trend, this offseason Davis decided to add boxing to his training regimen, and Lakers fans are very worried.
Why are Lakers Fans Worried About Anthony Davis Boxing in the Offseason?
Theoretically speaking boxing will help AD with his footwork, balance, hand speed, and endurance. He posted several videos of himself sparring on social media, showing off his improved physique and skills. However, not everyone was impressed by Davis’ new hobby.
Some Lakers fans expressed their concern that he was putting himself at risk of getting injured or knocked out by mistake. As you’ll see in the footage below Anthony Davis was not wearing protective head gear in the boxing ring.
Worried Fans argue that boxing is too dangerous for someone with his history of injuries, and that he should focus on basketball training only instead. They also pointed out that Davis looked vulnerable and shaky in the clips, and that he had a glass jaw that could not withstand a hard punch.
As evidence fans are remembering the scary moment when he was hit by an elbow from Golden State Warriors center Kevon Looney in Game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinals. He had to be taken out of the arena in a wheelchair.
As you’ll see below, the incident which happened in the fourth quarter of that game left AD dizzy on the court. He tried to stay in the game, but had to sit down on the bench before the Lakers team doctors escorted him to the locker room. There, he was unable to walk on his own, and had to be put on a wheelchair according to Chris Haynes.
All that from a what seemed like a light elbow to the head. Imagine if the fighter below snapped, and started swinging on AD, he would be on the floor in seconds, and might need another wheelchair.

Davis is not the first NBA player to try boxing as a form of training. Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Tyler Herro, and James Harden are some of the stars who have incorporated boxing into their workouts in the past. They all claimed that boxing helped them improve their strength, conditioning, agility, and mental toughness.
Whether boxing will have the same effect on Davis remains to be seen. He will have to prove himself on the court next season, and show that he can stay healthy and lead the Lakers back to championship contention. Until then, he will have to deal with the doubts. Let’s just hope he doesn’t get knocked out.
