Pete Rock Exposes How Spotify is Allegedly Scamming Independent Artists in Viral IG Posts
Legendary hip-hop producer Pete Rock has recently accused Spotify of scamming independent artists by underpaying them for streams. In a series of now deleted Instagram posts, Pete Rock revealed how much money Spotify made in revenue for 2023, and compared it to how much artists were getting paid per stream. He also revealed information about their alleged internal pay structure for employees.
Why Does Pete Rock Think Spotify is Scamming Independent Artists?
According to Pete Rock, Spotify made $12 billion in 2023. He claimed that they pay independent artists $0.003 per stream, which means that an artist would need a million streams to make $3,000. He urged his fans to support him and other independent artists by buying their singles or albums instead of streaming them on Spotify.
He also criticized Spotify for flaunting its annual Spotify Wrapped feature, which shows users their most streamed artists, songs, and genres of the year. He said that the artists’ paychecks do not reflect any of the numbers shown on Spotify Wrapped, and that they are not even close. He added, “SMH” (shaking my head), to express his disappointment and frustration.
In his final post, he dropped a bombshell by stating that it takes 400,000 monthly streams on Spotify for an artist to earn minimum wage. He contrasted this with the average Spotify employee’s salary, which he claimed is $14,000 a month. He wrote, “Meanwhile the average Spotify employee earns $14,000 a month”. He also added a caption saying “and that’s on purpose”, which insinuates that he believes that Spotify is purposely running a scheme that underpays independent artists.

Pete Rock’s posts have sparked a lot of reactions on social media, especially his claim that Spotify employees make $14,000 a month, which is probably more than most independent artists. Many users expressed their shock and anger at Spotify’s alleged exploitation of artists, and some even vowed to boycott the streaming service. Others questioned the validity of Pete Rock’s claims, and asked for more evidence or sources to back them up.
If Pete Rock’s claims are true, they show how the music industry is kept alive by music artists, but at the same time the music artist is the most undervalued aspect of the industry. Spotify, as the world’s biggest music streaming platform, has a huge influence and responsibility in shaping the music landscape and ensuring fair compensation for artists.
However, it seems that Spotify is more interested in maximizing its profits and pleasing its shareholders than supporting its creators and users, if Pete Rock is actually telling the truth.
