Lebron James Confirms Bronny James Had Heart Surgery and Reveals When He Will Return to Playing Basketball During 2023 Lakers Media Day Interview
Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James revealed that his son Bronny James had a successful heart surgery to correct a congenital defect that caused his cardiac arrest in July. He also revealed when his son will be able to play basketball again without limitations.
LeBron James shared the update on his son’s health during the 2023 Lakers media day on Monday. He was asked how he was dealing with the ups and downs of the offseason, such as Bronny’s medical scare and the Lakers’ roster overhaul. According to Lebron James, Bronny who plays for the University of Southern California, is expected to return to the court this season.
“Bronny is doing extremely well. He began his rehab process to get back on the floor this season with his teammates at USC. You know he had successful surgery, but he’s on the up and up. You know it’s definitely a whirlwind, and a lot of emotions for our family this summer, but the best thing we have is each other,” LeBron James said.
Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest during a basketball practice at USC in July, and was hospitalized. He was discharged a few days later to recover at home. His family announced in August that he was diagnosed with “an anatomically and functionally significant congenital heart defect” that could be treated.
However, it was not clear at the time how the doctors would go about fixing the defect. LeBron James confirmed on Monday that it was done through some type of surgery, but did not provide further details.
What is Congenital Heart Defect?
Congenital heart defects are problems with the heart’s structure that are present at birth. They can affect how blood flows through the heart and out to the rest of the body. Some congenital heart defects are mild and may not cause any symptoms, while others are more serious and require treatment. Some people have wondered if supplements that Lebron was taking could have caused the genetic heart defect Bronny was suffering from.
Bronny James is a highly touted basketball prospect who has followed in his father’s footsteps. He was ranked as the No. 19 player in the nation for the class of 2023 by ESPN, before he joined USC this year. He has also represented Team USA in international competitions such as the Nike Hoop Summit.
LeBron James expressed his pride and support for his son, who has shown resilience and determination despite his health challenges. There seems to be no doubt that he will fully recover, and continue on his path to the NBA.
