There’s an old saying we have all heard before. It goes something like “adding insult to injury”. This four-word metaphorical phrase is used to describe a situation where an already difficult or unfavorable circumstance is exacerbated by an additional action or comment.
To put it in perspective, it’s like pouring salt on a wound – not only does the initial injury hurt, but the added insult amplifies the pain. It’s akin to a double blow, where the physical injury is compounded by the emotional insult. Andre Drummond might have become the most notable example of this phrase in NBA history.
The Wheelchair: How Andre Drummond “Added Insult to Injury” in the Most Shaqtin-a-Fool Way
It was early in the second quarter, and Andre Drummond made a nice defensive play to deflect a pass, but things would go downhill from there.
His steal created a fast-break opportunity for the Bulls, with Torrey Craig holding the ball, getting ready to throw down a self alley-oop dunk off the glass, and Andre Drummond running behind him.
Maybe it was the angle of the pass, maybe it was something else, but for some reason, Andre Drummond thought Torrey Craig was throwing a pass to him. So when Torrey Craig jumped to catch his self-pass off the glass, Andre Drummond also jumped, which dangerously clipped Craig out of the air, causing him to land hard on his back and miss the dunk.
A few seconds later, Andre Drummond appeared to injure his Achilles tendon or ankle while attempting to block a shot, and had to be wheelchaired off the court. The look of disappointed on his face as the wheelchair slowly made its way of the court was tragic to see, especially after his embarrassing mishap with Torrey Craig.
On social media, many people are asking the scary question, did Andre Drummond just end his career on a Shaqtin-a-fool play? Hopefully, his injury isn’t as serious as it looks.”
